Involved with the Portuguese Water Dog since 2005, Kathy has become very passionate about the PWD, seeking to follow in the foot steps of the great ambassadors who protected and saved the breed a mere 30 years ago. Adamant about health testing, proper socialization and nutrition, she believes breedings should only take place when seeking to improve the next generation. Through research, breedings are carefully planned while taking into consideration health, structure, movement and temperament. The dogs are a labor of love, and they share her life with joy and happy tails!
Kathy is a full/active member of the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America . Kathy is also a member of three "regional" PWD Club; the Great Lakes Portuguese Water Dog Club (where she served 2.5 years as the President and played an integral part in getting the Club off the ground), and more recently - since moving west - has joined the Southern California PWD Club and the Rio Salgado PWD Club (based in Arizona).
To take you back through the history of Kathy's "dog life" - she began showing dogs when she was 12 years old. Before the age of 21 she owned, bred and/or finished over 25 champions and even spent a year working as a live-in kennel and show assistant to Professional Handlers Tom & Andrea Glassford. A successful junior handler, she also qualified for Westminster's LIMIT class before the age of 17.
Kathy's dog show days slowed down as college and adulthood approached. In 1993 she married her husband, Greg, who is a pilot in the US Navy. With multiple duty stations and cross-country relocations throughout the next 12 years, the Maguire's shared their home with 2 Doberman Pinschers and seldom attended dog shows.
Kathy developed the "itch" to get back into dog shows a few years ago. She researched several different breeds, and in early 2005 while browsing the web, she came across the personality description of the Portuguese Water Dog. It seemed like the perfect match and a brand new journey began! It wasn't long before "Liza" became a part of the family, and Kathy was right back into the dog show world like she never left. (Kathy trains, grooms and handles her own dogs).
Kathy's husband of 18 years, Greg, is a career military man, recently marking 23 years of service in the Navy. Commissioned in December of 1988 after attending the University of Southern California on a ROTC scholarship, Greg was promoted to the rank of Captain (0-6) in June of 2010 after completing a tour as the Navigator of USS George Washington. Most recently he was the Deputy Commander of Stragic Planning for the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle program at the Joint Center of Excellence in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is currently the Commodore of Recruiting Region East, based out of the Navy's Bureau of Personnel in Millington, Tennessee. Next stop? Hopefully retirement!!
